Best 10 Cases of Animals Saving Humans

I have been lurking on listverse for a while now and I thought it was about time I contributed something, so here is my first list. This list looks at 10 incidents in which animals have saved human lives. In all but one case the animals were protecting humans from other animal dangers. Feel free to mention any cases you know in the comments.

10
Cat
Saved Family from House Fire

Cat-Saves-Family-From-Fire-345

Dianne Busscher was woken up at 4:45 a.m. by the cries of the family cat, Oreo, coming from the garage. Busscher went down stairs to see what the fuss was about. What she saw was smoke and flames; she quickly grabbed the cat and rushed back inside to wake up her husband and their five children.
The fire destroyed the garage and a bedroom. None of the family was harmed thanks to the cat’s cries. As an interesting side note, none of the family had been too fond of the cat before this incident; however Jesse Busscher claimed “We love it now. This thing is getting some tuna tonight!” This is not as uncommon as might be expected – pictured above is another cat (Baby) who also saved her family from a house fire.

Dolphin
Saved Teenager from Drowning

Davide Ceci was 14 years old and couldn’t swim when he fell out of his Fathers boat in south-east Italy; he was within minutes of death when dolphin Filippo came to his rescue. Filippo had been a popular tourist attraction off Manfredonia in south-east Italy for two years. While Emanuele Ceci was still unaware his son had fallen into the waves, Filippo was pushing him up out of the water to safety. The dolphin bore down on the boat and got close enough for Davide’s father to grab him.

Davide’s mother Signora Ceci said: “It is a hero, it seems impossible an animal could have done something like that, to feel the instinct to save a human life.” Filippo has lived in the waters off Manfredonia since he became separated from a visiting school of dolphins. Maritime researcher Dr Giovanna Barbieri said: “Filippo seems not to have the slightest fear of humans. I’m not surprised he should have done such a wonderful thing as to save a human.” Pictured above is a beluga whale saving a drowning diver.

Dog
Saved Woman from River

Drowning-Dog-Saved-425Js081709

Brenda Owen had gone out for a quick walk with her dog when she spotted a wheelchair on the riverbank; she saw a woman floating in the river. She called out to her but there was no reply so she told her dog, Penny, to “Fetch! Fetch!” without hesitation the dog ran into the river, swam to the woman and pulled her to the shore. Brenda said that Penny has always been a very obedient dog and despite being 10 years old she was still very fit.

Dog
Saves boy from snake

In Texas, way back in 1982, a 2 year old child had been walking with his grandmother when Arf, the family dog, became very agitated; the dog became so agitated that the grandmother thought it best to take the child inside. Mrs. Sparks, the child’s mother, came out to find Arf in a fight with a 24 inch north-american coral snake, she shot the snake but arf had a lot of bites and scratches and had to be admitted into a veterinary hospital for 24 days. Although the newspaper that I got this from didn’t say whether he survived or not, it said he was making a strong recovery.

Watusi Calf
Saves Women from Snake

Cows-And-Calves-500

Janice Wolf was in the back pasture of the refuge she operates in Arkansas when her 11 month old Watusu Calf suddenly turned and blocked her path, she couldn’t understand why it was doing this, so she took hold of its horns and tried pushing it, but it tossed its head and knocked her off balance, that’s when she spotted a copper-head snake on the ground exactly were her foot would have been had the Watusi calf not intervened.

She said Copper-head venom usually isn’t fatal to adults; however it could well have been fatal to her because she had been extra sensitive to insect bites in the past and had just come out of hospital for a lung operation.

Dolphins
Save surfer from shark

Shark-04-Af

On one hot August day, Todd Endris, 24 year old owner of Monterey Aquarium services decided to go surfing with some friends. While surfing, a 15 foot shark appeared. The shark tried to bite him but could not get its jaws around both the surfer and the surf board, it came around for a second try where it got Todd clamped between his surf board and its jaws, because his stomach was against the surf board Todd’s internal organs were not harmed, however he lost a lot of skin from his back, the shark let go and came at Todd for a third time and tried to swallow his right leg, however this gave the surfer the grip he needed to start kicking the shark in the snout until it let go, at this point when Todd was running out of energy and thought he was done for, a pod of dolphins came out and formed a protective ring around him, keeping the shark at bay long enough for Todd to catch a wave back to shore and receive emergency first aid from his friend.

4
Pit bull
Saves woman and child from being attacked

Pit-Bull

In 2008 a woman and her young son had been walking home from a playground; as they entered a parking lot a man holding a knife approached them and told them not to make any movements. A large pit bull ran out of nowhere and charged the man, who quickly fled. An animal control authority said they had no idea what the mans intentions were but it was very possible that the dog saved Angela’s and her sons life.

What’s extraordinary about this case is that every other item on this list the animal is either doing what they are trained to do or the person(s) was in clear danger from other animals. This is the only case I found in my research where the danger was another human.

3
Gorilla
Saves Boy from being attacked

070314 Gorilla Vmed 11A.Widec

On August 16 1996 in the Brookfield Zoo, a 3 year old boy fell into a Gorilla enclosure and lost consciousness. Binti Jua a female Lowland Gorilla, guarded the young boy from the other Gorillas in the enclosure, she then cradled him in her arm (while her own 17 month old baby was on her back) and carried him 60 feet to an entrance where zoo-keepers could retrieve him.

This isn’t an isolated case, on August 31 1986 at Jersey Zoo a 5 year old boy fell into a Gorilla enclosure and lost consciousness, a large male Gorilla named Jambo stood guard over the boy not allowing any of the others to come near, when the boy woke up and started crying all of the Gorillas backed off and zoo-keepers (along with an ambulance) were able to retrieve him safely.

2
Dolphins
Save swimmers from sharks

Dolphin.1

Rob Howes, a British-born lifeguard, had gone swimming with his daughter, Niccy, and two of her friends off Ocean beach near Whangarei on the North Island of New Zealand, when a group of dolphins suddenly appeared. The dolphins started to herd the humans; they pushed all four of them together by circling around them. Howes tried to drift away from the group, but two of the bigger dolphins herded him back – just as he spotted a 10ft great white shark heading towards him. “I just recoiled,” he said. “It was only about two metres away from me, the water was crystal clear and it was as clear as the nose on my face. They had corralled us up to protect us.”

The dolphins kept this up for 40 minutes until the shark lost interest, and the group could swim the 100m back to shore. Another lifeguard, Matt Fleet, on patrol in a lifeboat, saw the dolphins circling the swimmers and slapping their tails on the water to keep them in place. He told the Northern Advocate newspaper that he also had a clear sighting of the shark. “Some of the people later on the beach tried to tell me it was just another dolphin; but I knew what I saw,” he said. Ingrid Visser, of Orca Research, an environmental group, said the dolphins’ behavior was understandable, as they attack sharks to protect themselves and their young, similar incidents had been reported round the world. “They could have sensed the danger to the swimmers, and taken action to protect them,” she said.

1
Treo
The bomb-sniffing search dog

Bomb-Dog

I want this item to represent all animals used for warfare and by the authorities, but rather than try to sum up all the brave military animals I will concentrate on one case: Treo, the bomb sniffing search dog. In the UK Treo ha recently been on the news for winning the Dickin Medal award, which is the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross (which is the British equivalent of the Medal of Honor). A total of 26 other dogs, 32 World War Two messenger pigeons, three horses and one cat have won the award, introduced by PDSA founder Maria Dickin in 1943.

Treo sniffed out two hidden bombs in Helmand province, potentially saving many lives, and is now at eight years old taking a well-deserved retirement. His handler, Sgt David Heyhoe, has worked with him for 5 years and Treo is now the family pet. Oh and if you are all just as intrigued as I am as to how Simon the cat won the award, read on: “[Simon] Served on HMS Amethyst during the Yangtze Incident, disposing of many rats though wounded by shell blast. Throughout the incident his behavior was of the highest order, although the blast was capable of making a hole over a foot in diameter in a steel plate.”

Hard marmot life in Tibet

Tibet as a country with its geographical position and climate is inhospitable territory not only for people but also animals. Life on planet earth is a miracle and there is where the least expected. This is the case of Tibet. And if it is very difficult for the life of Tibet’s rich animal and plant life. One of the animals I was particularly fascinated with their survival and successful survival in impossible circumstances. Marmot. These animals are not for the sake of survival and disclaims human assistance, although their man after a couple of large predators is a threat. Marmot and other rodents to multiply quickly and in some places rich food is a real nuisance, and people bring them almost to extinction. But this is an example of where Tibet marmot and receive help from good people as we can see in this truly unique images. Marmot subspecies generally have a lot of our friends in the pictures are Himalayan marmot. Himalayan Marmots are marmots found in the Himalayan regions ranging in elevation from 300 metres to 4,500 metres. They can be seen in the Deosai plains in Pakistan and Ladakh in Indian occupied Kashmir. They are about the size of a large housecat, and live in colonies. Marmota himalayanus is closely related to the Woodchuck, the Hoary Marmot and the Yellow-bellied Marmot. It has a dark chocolate-brown coat with contrasting yellow patches on its face and chest.

Sweet Baby Giraffe

Have you recently seen something this cute? The baby giraffes is the answer, for an animal lover, this is a rare opportunity to see pictures baby giraffes in captivity. A lot of sad, but these images without the baby’s parents, it is at this time, unfortunately, all the more frequent case, mostly due to human negligence and greed.

Balloon Fish

The balloon fish is a boxy-looking species with an angular head and large eyes. In its normal, nonthreatened pose, the long spines (modified scales) on its skin lie fl at against its body. The pectoral and tail fins are small and delicate. The skin is pale, and there are dark blotches on its skin, giving it a mottled look. Fully grown, the balloon fish can reach lengths of 50 cm.

The balloon fish is associated with tropical coral reefs, mangroves, sea grass beds, and rocky seabeds. It can be found around the world. In the Atlantic, it is found from the Bahamas to western Brazil, and in the Pacific, it is distributed widely through the numerous island groups. It is a shallow water species, rarely venturing to depths of more than 100 m.

balloon-fish-02

• The balloon fish is a type of porcupine fish, of which there are 19 species. They are closely related to pufferfish, which have a similar defensive ability, but not quite as pronounced.

• The internal organs of these fish, such as the ovaries and liver, contain a potent toxin known as tetrodotoxin, which is at least 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide.

• It acts on the nerves, disabling their ability to transmit electrical signals. Tetrodotoxin is produced by several types of bacteria dwelling inside the fish. Interestingly, the bacteria are somehow obtained from the fish’s diet. Fish bred in captivity are not poisonous.

balloon-fish-03

• In the Far East, especially Japan, the flesh of the pufferfish and its relatives is a rare delicacy. The term fugu is applied to both the fish and its meat. As food, the meat of these fi sh requires very careful preparation by very experienced chefs. The toxin is not damaged by washing or cooking, and an ill-judged fi lleting or misplaced slice can easily cause the accidental, fatal poisoning of a fugu lover.

• A drug called tectin has been developed from tetrodotoxin, which shows great potential as a powerful pain reliever that is able to dull the discomfort of cancer and drug withdrawal.

• The balloon fish and other types of porcupine fish are also fond of nibbling coral to extract the succulent polyps within. The calcium carbonate skeleton of the coral is swallowed, and some fish have been caught with over 500 g of the crushed material in their stomachs.

balloon-fish-04

• For reasons that are not yet understood, the pufferfish and it skin have the smallest genomes of any known vertebrate. Their complement of DNA appears to have little of the surplus carried by other species.

• Even out of water these fish can inflate themselves quite happily using air, but due to the diff erent properties of air and water, they have difficulty deflating themselves and can only do so if returned to the water.

• In the Far East, the dried, inflated bodies of these fish are often made into curios or bizarre lanterns illuminated from the inside by an electric bulb. The Pacific islanders once used the dried, swollen bodies to make fetching ceremonial helmets.

Best 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

This is a list of animals that are being used for our entertainment against their free will. They are held captive and used to perform tricks for greedy profiteers.

Monkeyscheerfulmonkey 1 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

Monkeys are the most used animal for human entertainment, they are trained to perform tricks for passers by on streets in nearly every country in the world. Most of these performing monkey’s are being treated well for their acts but some are not. Monkey’s are more entertaining in the wild, to see a monkey in its natural habitat is one of the worlds greatest wonders. To watch them performing in the streets to earn some profiteer some money is cruel. Monkey’s adapt to their surroundings and if they are taken out of the trees and brought to the busy streets to perform, they do adapt. They will learn that they must perform for food, in the wild all they have to do for food is pick it up. These people strip the monkey from the monkey and program its brain to dance for food. Monkey’s are usually a placid animal but they are unpredictable in behaviour, they can become dangerous when you least expect it. Most of the monkey’s that perform end up losing the plot and turn vicious and could attack at any time.

Bearsdancingbear 1 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

The mighty Bear is one of the worlds biggest animals, they are a lot more dangerous than the monkey. These animals are kept in cages and on a chain and some never see the sight of freedom ever. All bears kept in such poor conditions go crazy they turn inwards. To see a bear that has turned inside itself is the most heart breaking things you could see in your life. Their handlers whip and beat them if they do not perform, the bear doesn’t get angry because mentally the bear has given up on life knowing that there is nothing left but to perform. This activity has been banished from the Eastern world but is still being used as a method of entertainment in India, China and other countries with little or no animal rights.

Snakessnakecharmer17 1 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

Cobras are the most likely snake to be used for human entertainment all over Asia. The snake charmers take the snakes and make them perform for money. In parts of Asia this is a trade passed down from generation to generation. Snakes are blind, they don’t see like we do they work off heat patterns, the snake charmers fool the snake by agitating it waving their hands around its head until it strikes, or spits its venom. These snakes are suppose to use these skills for hunting not performing. They also use these snakes for fighting each other and they take bets on which type of snake will beat the other. Most species of snakes are used for this type of entertainment. The fights always end up in a fight to the death. In the wild they learn to keep their distance from each other to live in harmony. In an instance like this they are put in a ring with no escape one dies and one leaves the ring until the next time it is used for the same purpose.

Cocksfestero20cock20fight20ring 1 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

Cock fights are well known all around the world and there are cock rings in every country. Profiteers take bets on which cock will prevail, most of these fights are to the death, if they don’t die in the fight they will have to be killed afterwards because of the wounds they sustain from the winner of the battle. Cocks are a farm animal and they will fight each other to rule the roost, but on a farm there is plenty of room for the smaller cock to evade the bigger one, and keep out of its way. In the ring surrounded by humans that are cheering the fight, there is no where for the loser to run to, it is caged by the people that would gladly see the stronger one finish the losing one off.

Dogs20335110200845224amgypsy2 1 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

The loyal friend of man is being used for dog fighting rackets, just as the cock they take bets on the winner. The dog fights are more vicious, they rare the dog to be angry and vicious, and throw it into a ring with another like trained dog. The wounds suffered in these fights are truly horrific and usually result in the dog being put down. People stand and watch as the two dogs rip and tear lumps off each other, I don’t know how a human could just sit back and watch something that is so cruel. These dogs are trained their whole lives for the sole purpose of fighting and they know no different. Even when these dogs are rescued from their trainers they will have to be put down anyway because of their temperament.

Horses233312209202eae7b0b6 1 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

Horses are used in every country of the world for entertainment, horses run that’s what they love doing. Weight restrictions and such laws have been passed to ensure cruelty is not being imposed, but there are fatalities in horse racing and if a horse breaks its leg it has to be destroyed. The jockey on the horses back often whips the horse to complete a race at full speed, some times the horse exhausts it efforts and the jockey still whips it to get the last bit of energy out of it. In the wild or in the fields the horse will simply just stop when it gets to tired, it does not have such a luxury in the height of a race, where the jockey and trainer want to push it to earn maximum profits.

TigersTigers 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

Tigers are being used in the circus to perform tricks for their food. These are often trained from a young age and they live their life traveling from one town to the next. They are kept in cages and like prisoners in a jail they get out once or twice to walk around and exercises and the they are back in their cages until it is time to perform. Tigers are natives of jungles and here they come and go as they please, climb trees and hunt for their food. These animals have never seen freedom or know what it is like to be an actual tiger, their brain has been altered to be a performer instead of the tiger, if this was done to a person it would be a crime.

Elephantselephants 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

Elephants are used as tools in India, they do a lot of construction work for the Indian people but they are treated as elephants would be in the wild. They are given the same rights as an Indian worker would be and they do not have cages to keep them in an area. Elephants are pretty smart and they will form a friendship with humans as long as they are being treated right. In the circus they do not have these privileges, they may be confined to a small patch of land and they travel for miles in the back of a truck

every few days. They are used for performing tricks in the big ring. Elephants are able to travel miles everyday in the wild but in the wild they are not confined by a cage on a truck. They get mentally effected over long periods same thing different town, they will spend most of their life in the circus and will never see the freedoms that they were born to see.

Dolphins

dolphindiscovery 1 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

Dolphins are native to the seas of the world and you wouldn’t expect to see them anywhere else in the world. They are being used for human entertainment in aqua parks across the globe, these parks are for one purpose only to generate profit for their owners. Here you pay a fee to see dolphins perform tricks for treats, they have a cage of water keeping them from the freedom of the open sea. Dolphins in the wild live in family groups of up to 50 individuals, to keep a dolphin by itself in captivity could mentally destroy the animal, that is why they keep them in twos or threes in these parks. Most of these dolphins have been plucked from the ocean and put in these parks for entertainment, the dolphins that have been born in captivity will never know what it is like to experience the ocean currents or to follow a boat or jump along in front of a ship.

Killer Whales830291179744795b38d 1 10 Animals Being Used for Human Entertainment

You wouldn’t think that whales would be held in captivity because of their sheer size, well in America they have built a big enough tank to hold two against their will. Instead of hunting at the Artic Circle with their other whale buddies they are in Florida performing tricks in a huge fish tank for the public. These whales are as smart as the dolphin and elephant, but yet they are reduced to performing tricks for food. Keeping any of these animals in captivation is against Gods will, this doesn’t matter what God you believe in or whether you believe in one or not. It is wrong by any stretch of an imagination and should be stopped.
